How does this differ from a Thai kham sabaan (คำสาบาน)?
A Thai kham sabaan is an oath under Thai Civil Procedure and has no automatic recognition abroad. A Statutory Declaration is drafted to the receiving Commonwealth Act, which is the version the foreign registrar expects.
Do I need to swear on any religious text?
No — a Statutory Declaration is by definition a solemn declaration, not an oath. That is the distinguishing feature.
Can I sign remotely from Bangkok using a UK notary's e-platform?
You can, but that produces a UK document, not a Thai one — and it is billed at UK notary rates. A Thai Statutory Declaration is materially cheaper and is accepted for most non-court uses.
