Certified Translation across Thailand — 12 Cities, 30+ Languages

A translation destined for Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalisation, one prepared for an Australian authority by a NAATI-certified practitioner, and one filed as evidence in a Thai court follow different formats and different certifying signatures. Name the receiving office when you order and the correct route is selected once, rather than discovered after a rejection.

Certification attests that the translation corresponds to a specific source. Phone photographs at an angle, cropped edges and illegible seals force the translator to mark passages as unclear, which weakens the document. Scan flat, in full colour, at a readable resolution, including reverse sides and any stapled annexes.

Thai names, institution names and place names can be romanised several defensible ways. Provide the passport biodata page and any spelling already used in earlier filings so the whole set reads consistently. Consistency across a bundle is what stops an officer treating two spellings as two different entities.

Some authorities want the original legalised and then translated; others want the translation certified and legalised together. Reversing the order usually means paying for the same step twice. Confirm the sequence with the receiving office, then book the steps back to back so no certification goes stale in between.

Many authorities accept civil registry extracts or company records only if issued within a recent window. Translating an old extract perfectly does not cure that problem. Order the fresh extract first, then translate, so the whole set is inside the window on the day of lodgement.

Certified sets are frequently needed again for a renewal, an appeal or a second authority. Keep the stamped original in your own file, submit a duplicate where duplicates are accepted, and store the digital copy with the certification page in the same file so the two never become separated.

Automated output handles legal terminology, honorifics and registry formulae poorly, and a certifier who signs it without a full human review is attesting to something they have not checked. Reviewers notice the tell-tale phrasing, and the credibility of the entire bundle suffers, not just the one page.

A faithful translation describes every mark on the page, including illegible ones, rather than silently omitting them. Missing an endorsement recorded on the back of a civil registry document is a common reason a set is returned, because the reader cannot tell whether the omission is an error or a concealment.

A translator's own declaration, a notarial certificate and a foreign accreditation such as NAATI answer different questions and are not interchangeable. Sending the wrong one is not a formality that can be waived at the counter; the document simply falls outside what that office is permitted to accept.

Once certified, the document is fixed. Correcting a date or a spelling in the PDF afterwards severs the link to the certifier and is detectable in the file history. Genuine errors should be returned for a fresh certified reissue, which is faster than defending an altered file.

Documentary evidence in a foreign language generally has to be filed with a Thai translation, and the volume in a contested matter is easy to underestimate. Late instructions force either a rushed job or an application for more time. Identify the exhibits early and translate in stages.

Different providers will render the same ministry, university or company name differently, and the inconsistency is visible when the bundle is read as a whole. If work must be split, share one glossary and have a single reviewer reconcile the terminology before anything is certified.
